October has been a very busy month at the SU with plenty of events and bar nights, and lots of new clubs and societies!
On October 18th, myself (Harriet, Marketing and Enterprise Lead) and Kate (Volunteering and Charities Lead) ran a Volunteering and Careers Fair in the Student Union, where we invited companies and charities to advertise work experience, part-time employment, commission work, volunteering, and more to students.
We were joined by Pollenize CIC, Young Arts, First Class Magazine, Yoga Loft, The Box, Plymotion, Bike Space, Devon Wildlife Trust, Improving Live: Plymouth, The Childrens Society, Cancer Research UK, Colebrook: Head Space, Horizon Counselling Services, Plymouth Community Photographic Studios, Special Olympics Plymouth and District, British Red Cross, Oxfam, St Luke’s Plymouth and Louise Sharland (from the Careers Team) with the Job Wall!
Thank you to everyone who attended, we hope that it was a worthwhile event and you have gained some interesting opportunities through the contacts that you made!
As we draw closer to the end of October, I thought it was only right to summarise what a wonderful Breast Cancer Awareness Month we’ve had. Breast cancer is an issue very close to my own heart (I’m sure that many of you feel the same) and so I really wanted us to fundraise for such an important cause.
You may have noticed myself and Rowena fundraising in the reception area, or perhaps you spotted lots of staff wearing pink on October 18th? As part of the efforts to make more students aware of such an issue, you may have also noticed breast check stickers appearing on bathroom mirrors or spotted freebies and information in the Student Union for the past month. All of these things and more have been part of the cause; I worked with several charities this month which led to us deciding to raise money for Breast Cancer Now, Coppa!Feel and Against Breast Cancer.
We still have wristbands, enamel pins, trolley tokens, pens, stickers and donation buckets in the SU Office if anyone would like to further contribute to the cause. I’ve also ordered a Bra Collection Bank which will now permanently live in the SU Office for anybody who would like to donate their old and unwanted bras.
I’m happy to announce that our grand total for the month of fundraising is £43.95. Thank you all for your donations and contributions towards the cause!
Best,
Harriet Moore
Marketing and Enterprise Lead
