Staying Safe on a Night Out

Embarking on a night of clubbing or hitting the local pub should be a memorable and safe experience, so here are some tips to ensure your nights out are enjoyable and worry-free.

Plan your Evening - Let someone know your whereabouts, whether it's a roommate, family member, or a trusted friend. Share your location with them or establish check-in times throughout the night.

Stay Connected - Remember, there's strength in numbers. Always stick with your friends and watch out for each other. Try to stay in a group, or call/text a friend if you have to head off in a different direction. Let each other know when you've gotten home safely!

Trusted Travel - Speaking of getting home safely, opt for reputable taxi services, rideshare apps, or designated drivers. Try to pre-book taxis or make sure you know where the nearest taxi bank is. Avoid walking alone in dimly lit areas and prioritize your safety by planning your journey home in advance. There are some great local taxi companies, and we'd recommend using companies such as Need A Cab where possible.

Drink Responsibly - If you're planning on drinking, it's crucial to consume alcohol responsibly. Pace yourself, stay hydrated, and know your limits. Opt for bottled drinks and never leave your beverage unattended. Remember that we have drink stoppers, spike-testing strips and other anti spiking devices available, for free, from the Student Union Office all year round!

Trust your Instincts - If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, trust your gut and remove yourself from that environment. It's always better to be cautious and proactive than to find yourself in a risky situation. Listen to your instincts and prioritize your well-being above all else.

Get Help - If you end up in a situation that is dangerous or difficult, make sure to reach out for help. Ask a passer-by or employee at the venue. There are often initiatives for discreet support at clubs and pubs like the Ask for Angela scheme which you can learn about here. Even if you aren't in immediate danger, or you just feel a bit unsure there is no harm in asking for help. It is better to err on the side of caution and give yourself some peace of mind. There are also Emergency Help Points in various locations across the city centre, that help you contact emergency services and have CCTV in case you're in danger.

By prioritizing safety and employing these tips, you can ensure that your evenings are enjoyable and worry-free. Remember, your well-being comes first, so embrace the night safely and make lasting memories while looking out for yourself and your friends!

Stay safe and party responsibly!
